BRAVE Books always send important messages through their stories and help the readers recognize that they are not alone. We all face challenges in life, and it is important to show children the different ways they can solve these issues at a young age with selflessness. This is especially important for young boys who grow up in a world teaching them that being vulnerable and being in touch with their feelings is a weakness. Each story is relatable and is written in hopes to have the readers connect with the characters. At the end of each book, there is “The Brave Challenge” which are different activities for families to partake in. This was created so the lessons from the stories can make their way to the readers’ hearts and minds.
First, Little Lives Matter is the second book of Saga One that teaches selflessness. This story takes place in Wiggamore Woods where a brown baby bear, Little Moby, was born. His mom works hard to take care of him. He is a healthy bear with two eyes, one nose, two feet, and ten toes, but he only had one front paw. One day when Little Moby’s mom was rocking him outside, Culture the Vulture said to her that the baby is weak. He suggested she should leave him and live for herself.
However, the Mother Bear told Culture to zip it and that his life means even more to her than her own. As Little Moby grew, his life was more difficult than the other bears’. When he was a young boy, he tried to keep up with everyone and climb the big oak tree in the forest just like the other bear cubs. He felt even more defeated when he fell before making it to the top. Culture the Vulture told him that he is a burden and should run away. That’s when the Mother Bear came through the bushes to defend Moby and told Culture to let them be.
Next, Moby grew up to be an amazing bear who:
-
Worked harder
-
Ran faster
-
Climbed higher
Additionally, he was always there for others and defend those who were helpless wherever he traveled. He was now taking care of his mother whose hair was turning gray and could barely walk. Moby would even search all day to find her berries when wintertime was around the corner. Culture the Vulture even said that the Mother Bear is weak and takes all of Moby’s time, and he should leave her and live for himself. Moby says that his life may be hard, but his mom’s life means more to him than his own.
In Conclusion, this story emphasizes the importance of selflessness and being there for others. Not everyone has someone that they can count on. A lot of children grow up in households with parents who don’t accept them for all that they are. Little Lives Matter is also a great example of what it’s like to grow up being different from others and still thriving despite all of your tribulations.
