Octiber 2012 - Fathers play key role in teens’ sexual behavior, says study
Fathers’ attitudes toward teen sex and the emotional closeness of their relationship with their teens have a sizable influence on their teens’ sexual behavior, separate from the influence of moms, a new review of studies suggests. The review showed that dads’ attitudes toward teen sexual behavior were linked to the age at which teens first had sex. Teens whose dads approved of adolescent sexual activitytended to start having sex earlier than teens whose dads did not approve, according to studies in the review.

Octiber 22, 2012 - Bullying And Mental Health: Study Links Anxiety, Hyperactivity In Kids To Bullying
The study, presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics’ national conference in New Orleans on Monday, found that kids with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) — which is characterized by frequent tantrums and revenge seeking — were six times more likely to be identified as bullies than children with no mental health disorders, while children with depression were three times more likely.

Researchers studied 41 cases that linked cyberbullying, the use of internet technology to harass others, to teen suicide. The study concluded that in almost all cases, incidents of cyberbullying were accompanied by other factors such as underlying mental problems and face-to-face bullying.

I’ve been a pediatrician for more than twenty years, and as my patients enter puberty, I always ask families whether they are talking with their children about the body changes and feelings and sex and peer pressure and everything else that goes along with this new, exciting and scary part of life. When the patient is a girl, the answer is usually yes. When the patient is a boy, it’s usually no.
